So like, this is pretty amazing. Nearly a year after Hurricane Katrina, I HAVE AN APARTMENT AGAIN! (I do not count my exile among the Houstonians.) It's exciting. And once I get my shoji screens I will be living large, living off the fat of the land. Yhurd?

Uh, if anyone reads this who'd be interested and doesn't know yet, I have indeed created my livejournal community dealing with apocalyptic/post-apocalyptic everything, mostly books and movies...so if you haven't joined yet, get up on it...diluvium_ignis...we actually READ books and TALK about them! Isn't that cool? And if you don't care, you probably know someone out in LJ land who might.

I've been busting my brain on this Japanese language, Nihongo, again. I got my TESL/ESL certification and all I have to do is wave my pinky through the air and supposedly they find me a job when I want one. But I will not be ready until I can say, "I'm riding the bus down a street in Shinjuku." And write it. Which is much harder. Let's see...Boku wa...basu ni...unten shite, wait no that's driving...tori...Shinjuku...jisho wa doko desu ka? I'm embarrassing myself. If only all of you could have heard my supe-chi about preparing tofu last Saturday though, that was awesome. And I got a Starbucks gift card for it too. No trophy though :[

Let's see...what else? So much, so much. I DJed at a club night in Long Beach called Sacrilege, that was fun, many people danced to my whole set. I will most likely be spinning at some other venues too sooner or later.

God, SITD is sad. Though my electronica tastes have shifted more to the screamy harsh terror EBM stuff (like the new Tactical Sekt which I BARELY managed to get the limited edition double CD set of), I have favored some new synthpop I've been hearing. Syrian, Conetik, Les Anges de la Nuit are all super cool. You should have seen those crazy fools dance to Cold Star! w00t Everyone says that Conetik sounds just like Covenant, but I think only Cold Star really does. What can you do? Good tanz muzak is good tanz muzak. Besides, isn't Covenant like electroclash now or something? Just kidding. I like the new album ok.

I read a great book that I can't really talk about on diluvium_ignis because it's so not really the theme, though it is about the fall and end of an age...

So yeah, this broken leg thing has gotten REALLY OLD REALLY FAST. True, at least I've done it before (although the actual injury and the circumstances surrounding it were far scarier then) but I'm not making any money, I'm not doing karate, and I can't stop sleeping and eating! Don't really have anything useful to say so now I'm going to be catty and mean because I really just need to go here.

So there's this girl in my karate class. Don't know what it is about her that horrifies and disgruntles me SO much, but it's pretty regoddamndiculous. I mean she's not ugly -- I mean she kind of looks like a baby pig in the face but really not an unattractive girl by your average Cauc standards. And she's not stupid, really not even somewhat unintelligent. I really wish I could put my finger on it. Is it because she is so unnecessarily perky? Is it her little bug car with the flower bumper stickers and the one that says "question reality" that I seriously thought about running a key across? Is it that she seems so innately passive and sheeplike? I can't stand not having a solid reason for hating someone so utterly.

Been doing Chi Kung again. Fell right into it all over but in the middle of doing it I keep breaking into laughter and asking myself if I'm not totally wasting give or take 45 minutes of my day. I'm not real big on wasting time as of late, I mean it really scares me.

I've been reading way too much theoretical sci-fi bullshit on MSNBC. I'm starting to apply all of this to everyday life.

...Oct. 8 — Over the past century, physicists have unlocked the secrets behind radio and television, nuclear energy and the power of the sun. Now they’re seeking the ultimate prize: a “theory of everything” that could reveal a bizarre realm of interdimensional wormholes and time warps.
SUCH A THEORY would give us the ability to “read the mind of God,” says Cambridge cosmologist Stephen Hawking. And in Hawking’s opinion, there’s a 50-50 chance that someone will discover the Holy Grail of physics within the next 20 years.
It won’t be easy, though: The discoverer would have to find the harmony underlying two themes as discordant as light Bach and heavy rock.
On one side is Albert Einstein’s theory of general relativity. Einstein saw the large-scale universe as a smooth, curved surface in four dimensions (the three dimensions of space plus time). The gravitational force that binds us to the earth arises from the very structure of that space-time continuum.
On the other side is quantum theory. Beginning in the 1920s, a generation of scientists defined the small-scale universe as a collection of fuzzy phantoms. These subatomic particles couldn’t be precisely located in space and time, but their interaction could be described in statistical terms.
SPACE-TIME’S OUT OF JOINT
Both theories are proven successes — but taken together, they’re out of joint. The equations that describe the gravitational field are completely different from those for electromagnetism and subatomic interactions.
Moreover, each theory is incomplete by itself. Relativity cannot tell us how the big bang gave rise to the universe as we know it, or what lies within the black holes created by the collapse of massive stars. Quantum theory, meanwhile, only describes an assortment of particles, mathematical constants and equations — without divining the sense and symmetry underlying them all.
For decades, theorists have tried various strategies to roll up the gravitational field and the quantum field into one set of equations. Most of the attempts failed. “Whenever we tried to calculate numbers from these theories, we would arrive at meaningless infinities,” said theoretical physicist Michio Kaku.
SUPERSTRANGE SUPERSTRINGS
But one bizarre approach is gaining popularity. It turns out that the equations of quantum theory can mesh perfectly with the theory of relativity — if we look at them from the perspective of a 10-dimensional universe.
The concept is called “superstring theory,” because theoreticians imagine the core components of the universe as tiny loops of string or membranes vibrating in 10 dimensions. Different resonances of the vibrations correspond to different types of particles. Thus, electrons, neutrinos and other elementary particles fit on a grand cosmic scale, just as the notes A, B and C fit on a musical scale.
Kaku says it should come as no surprise that the universe makes more sense in higher dimensions. After all, Einstein made the universe seem more sensible by including time as the fourth dimension.
But if the universe we only dimly understand as having four dimensions really has 10 — where are the other six dimensions? Kaku and his fellow string theorists contend that when the big bang inflated our four dimensions into the universe as we know it, the extra six dimensions collapsed into loops smaller than the smallest observed subatomic particle.
If humans could somehow identify and harness those dimensions, it might become possible to manipulate those interdimensional fields. You could create stable “wormholes” for rapid transit across the universe. You might even be able to drop into parallel “quantum universes” that operate under physical laws completely different from our own.
NEEDLE IN A COSMIC HAYSTACK
Exploring such science-fiction possibilities would require resources of science-fiction proportions.
There are millions of possible solutions for the superstring equations — and figuring out the right solution for our universe would be like picking a needle out of a galaxy-sized haystack. Even if the theory turns out to be right, probing the shrunken dimensions would require energies approaching the scale of the big bang — trillions of trillions of times more powerful than a hydrogen bomb.

However, outer space could open a window to the hidden dimensions and at least provide some confirmation of superstring theory. By observing the patterns of particles and antiparticles flying through space, researchers just might find indirect evidence to back up a “theory of everything"...

I don't know how I feel about living in a ten-dimensional universe. I can't even handle the four that I'm capable of perceiving.

Apparently I cannot freak myself out on mad amounts of caffeine for long drives anymore. My whole system was a wreck after the trip back and I had to pee every ten miles. Most unpleasant.

Final note: I will NEVER agree to watch nine hours of straight TV again after this recent DUNE / Children of DUNE marathon. Why did I ever think that would be a good idea? I crack up laughing because I'm a phreak and my date is offended and made ill and complains to our waitress who also cooked the food apparently, and she picks it off of the plate with her fingers and tries to tell us that it was part of the broccoli.

So yeah, I think karate-do is the coolest. I took my first karate belt test last Sunday. It was a lot like the Tae Kwon Do belt test I took many winters ago, only easier, b/c in Tae Kwon Do you spar with people freestyle regardless of what rank you are. But Karate is, well, Japanese. 'Nuff said. Plus I do personally think it's more aesthetically pleasing as a style even if not as hardcore as Tae Kwon Do. I'm just kind of mad at myself for not forking over the extra cash to test for two belts instead of one, b/c I REALLY had that Heian 2 kata down.

Bah.

I hope I don't have to take any drug tests anytime soon for employment, I really don't want to have to starve myself and time my peeing down to the second.

Matrix allusions aside, people tend to spend large portions of their lives asleep -- not taking the blame for their mistakes or any responsibility in general for what they bring into being. One big pot of gonja, a brain injection, a breath of SOMA for every innovative or independent thought or impulse that might happen by. And yes, as we know, some people spend their whole lives this way, and it's truly pitiable in some cases because they've never even been given the chance to experience very much at all beyond awake/asleep, hungry/full. Example: any given day working at a store like Hot Topic.

This is something that I cannot allow to happen to me, because if I wake up at some point in my mid-30s I'll be a hell of a lot more miserable than I am now.

The picture for May 2003 in my Hubble Space Telescope calendar is the globular cluster Omega Centauri. 17,000 light years away, stars upon stars upon even bigger, brighter stars, and here we sit on the edges of our galaxy, revolving around just one of them, one big redundant ellipsis.

Scary, to see possibilities winking out, one by one, as time and age and all of those endless little obstacles do their thing. Quite a few possibilities, hopes, dreams still remain, I guess, but damn, the world is so less cool now than when I was 10. Or even 18.

Picked up some CDs that have pleasantly surprised me. Hurray Decoded Feedback / Shockwave, the happy impulse buy of the year for me! I REALLY like this album, and although the distorted vocals are a bit much here and there, it's a good, solid production, and I'm not surprised it's the #1 seller on Metropolis right now. Definitely a departure from their earlier stuff, a lot harder. The new Culture Kultur mini-album, Combat!, is also absolutely great, no less spectacular than Revenge was. Woo hoo, good stuff that I'm not sick of listening to!!!!
Hmm...looks like I'm probably (and this is hopefully a tenuous probably) going to be sticking around New Orleans for longer than I had hoped. Big surprise, huh? Yeah, I know all of you were worried and tearing at your hair in ghastly suspense, but fear not, I'll be rotting out the summer with the rest of you. Truth is, I'm *ack* comfortable here, and I'd really like to take some time to actually work on my WRITING. Funny that.

Atom has moved out and is yoking out a somewhat strained existence in what looks like a terrorist bunker ready to be bombed. No refrigerator, no AC, lots of little and not so little bug friends to keep him company. What's going to be worse, the two of us in my one-ROOM apartment, or listening to him whine about waking up with roaches breeding in every orifice?

I'm hardcore looking forward to the cut.rate.box / Ass23 show at this point. You cut.rate.men always put on a great show, I hope you guys realize that we appreciate all of the energy that you put into your NOLA performances.

Things I like right now:

- the weather. Why, when misty/cloudy/rainy atmospherical conditions make me want to go into long-term hibernation, I cannot explain, but if I could go through the whole upcoming summer without seeing the sun I'd be one happy prole.

- the fact that I'm finally going to see Ass23 live, and at a time in their performance history when they're probably going to be decent, at least, if not better than decent. Oh yeah, and cut.rate.box too. At this point I'm quite taken with Dataseed.

- KARATE. Possibly at the Jewish Community Center, no less.

- finally having enough money to buy one or two new CDs. Yay, new Culture Kultur!

The things I hate at the moment far outweigh the items on the previous list, but a few things I REALLY, INTENSELY despise include: Tori Amos, strange index finger pins and needles, uncontrolled externalized internal dialogue, questions re: [what I'm going to do with my misbegotten thusfarsquandered existence], and the general sense of being unappreciated (the last item probably not applying to anyone taking the time to read this).
